Does extremism exist in Pakistan?

Western and Indian media are clamouring about burgeoning extremism in Pakistan which, in their highfalutin opinion, would prove disastrous for its very existence. Their cohorts in Pakistan also join their cacophony and claim that high water mark of extremism in Pakistan has rung the alarm bells. The question is does “religious extremism” actually possess any base in Pakistan?

To analyse the phenomenon of extremism, it is imperative to evaluate it in relation with different civilizations. In America, the dragon of extremism is running its course. There are myriad of extremist outfits mushroomed in America with blood curdling views. Aryan Nations, one of the extremist groups, aims its hatred at blacks, Jews, and other minorities. This group thinks that Jews are the offspring of Satan, blacks are subhuman, and America is the new “Promised Land” that belongs “exclusively to whites”. Butler, head of this organisation, and his followers believe in a “day of reckoning” when the “usurper will be thrown out.”

A number of high-profile extremist crimes occurred in the late 1990s. In June 1998, three Texas men with connections with white supremacist groups chained James Byrd, a black man, to the back of their pickup truck and dragged him to death. In July 1999, Nathaniel Smith, a member of the white supremacist World Church of the Creator, went on a three-day shooting spree in Illinois and Indiana.

Many militant hate groups stockpile weapons and engage in paramilitary activities, including rifle and pistol marksmanship, bomb making, and hand-to-hand combat training. Extremist groups have long espoused paramilitary units and militias as a means of defending white supremacy and as a recruiting tool. In April 1985, federal, state, and local law enforcement authorities entered the 90-hectare (220-acre) compound of the Covenant, Sword, and Arm of the Lord (CSA). Inside, authorities found a rifle range complete with wooden pop-up targets, bomb-building instructions, caches of weapons and ammunition (including hand grenades), and a 110-liter (30-gallon) drum of cyanide — a poison, which is so dangerous that even if little amount of it is placed on the palm of a man, it is sufficient to kill him. The CSA had plans to dump the cyanide, a deadly poison, into an unspecified city’s water supply, so that it could get rid of “unwanted human beings”. Even more frightful than armed racist militants are armed racist militants with a plan. In 1998, the FBI recorded 7,755 incidents of extremist crimes in the United States.

Surprisingly, members of extremists are not backward or uneducated. Richard Butler was an aerospace engineer before he founded Ayran Nations. William Pierce was a physics professor at Oregon State University in Corvallis before he founded the National Alliance. The late William Gale was a colonel in the US Army before he authored a handbook on guerrilla warfare tactics for the Posse Comitatus. Matt Hale, the leader of the white supremacist World Church of the Creator, is a lawyer. As is Kirk Lyons, the founder of the CAUSE Foundation, an organisation that offers legal support to extremist groups. (CAUSE stands for Canada, Australia, United States, South Africa, and Europe-everywhere that “kindred” white people are found).

Indian society is infested with rabid extremists. Gruesome and grisly events of Gujarat episode unmasked the face of Hindu fanatics that often remains hidden beneath the veneer layer of secularism and their overwhelming support in the Hindu society. Mere on a “suspicion” that Muslims were responsible to set ablaze the train in which Hindu fundamentalists were travelling, Hindu extremists slaughtered thousands of Muslims. Many Muslims were burnt alive. Many Muslim women were raped. Sanguinary fanatics even cut apart the belly of a pregnant woman and after doing that, killed the child, which was in her womb.

Babri Mosque was turned into debris in 1991 by Hindu fanatics and hundreds of other mosques are on their target now with the similar idea, which they had about Babri Mosque. Bal Thackery has prepared death squads to annihilate Muslims.

Genocide of Palestinian Muslims by Israeli army is known by all and sundry. Israeli army has been given the authority to bulldoze the houses of “suspects” and kill them with their own choice. “Terrorists” killed by Israeli army include 2-year-old children and women in their nineties.

Afghanistan was reduced to ashes by Americans on the basis of “suspicion” that perpetrators of 9/11 were hiding there. “Suspicion” that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, qualified it to be used as a testing ground for the up-to-the-minute war machines of the US, which reduced Iraq into cinder. Serbian army carried out genocide of Muslims. Russia killed hundreds of thousands of Chechen Muslims to subdue their spirit for freedom.

Surprisingly, none of them has been declared “fundamentalist” or “extremist”. The title of fundamentalist or extremist has been reserved for Muslims only. The westerners, including self-professed liberals of Pakistan, are yelping vociferously over the rising curve of extremism in Pakistan. Who are these extremists? A community, which has affinity and affiliation with Islam. These “Pakistani extremists” have never tried to exterminate blacks by poisonous substance like cyanide. They have never massacred their non-Muslim compatriots in a similar fashion their Muslim brothers were treated in Gujarat holocaust.

In the aftermath of 9/11, in which “prime suspect” was a Muslim, countless Muslims were persecuted and their places of worship were attacked.

In 1971 debacle, the worst opprobrium and humiliating blow in the fourteen hundred years of Islamic history, Indian Hindu army bifurcated Pakistan, unlike in America, where two buildings were blown up by terrorists, which traumatized the whole Pakistani nation. In this case, there was “no suspicion” that who dismembered Pakistan. Every body knew it was vulpine Hindu army, which had fragmented their homeland. However, not a single Hindu was killed in Pakistan, not a single Hindu temple was razed by any “Pakistani Muslim extremist”. Babri Mosque was dismantled in India but Hindu temples remained safe in Pakistan from “extremists”.

Although few unfortunate incidents of attacks on churches occurred last year, but these dastardly attacks were roundly condemned by religious parties by declaring these incidents un-Islamic. Thus, it was unequivocally stated that “extremists” were not the perpetrators of these heinous crimes. Considering the tactics of Indian intelligence agencies to slur the image of Muslim freedom fighters in Kashmir by planning and executing savagery by their own touts, especially on the eve of visit of foreign personalities, it can be said with a certain degree of certainty that the perpetrators of these crimes could be none other than the agents of RAW who want to malign Islam and practicing Muslims. Because history stands witness to this fact that these “extremists” have never carried out such attacks on any non-Muslim faction of their country.

Pakistani “extremists” are lampooned by “liberals” for their penchant to forge unity among Muslims and fight their common enemies collectively. When the British forces joined hands with the Americans, when war was declared against Afghanistan in the aftermath of September 11 attacks, no one branded the Britons as extremists, despite that fact that the attacks were carried out in New York and not in London, Manchester or Birmingham. Similarly, when Turkey, a country with overwhelmingly Muslim population, sent its troops in Afghanistan to aid Americans in war, no one labelled Turkey as fundamentalist. It is strange that when non-Muslims join non-Muslims to fight their collective war or Muslims join non-Muslim forces to combat their enemy, it is considered okay but when it is said that Muslims all over the world, if united are a potent force to reckon with, must carve out joint strategy to defeat their common enemies, instantly title of extremism is awarded.

Pakistani “extremists” have rendered unprecedented sacrifices to save Pakistan from foreign aggressors and snatch from the enemy what the Quaid called jugular vein of Pakistan.

When Russian army rolled into Afghanistan in 1979 in search of warm waters of Karachi, these extremists became a leaden wall and spilled their last drop of blood to defeat the mighty super power of that era. It is often claimed that it was the American military hardware that wreaked havoc on Russians. The question is: Did America started manufacturing of lethal weapons after Russian invasion in Afghanistan? The answer is in negative. Then why America, with all its supremacy of arms over Russia, could not defeat its arch rival throughout the cold war era, which started just after the termination of Word War II.

So, it was not the wherewithal of America but the will of “extremists” which spelled doomsday for Russia in Afghanistan. Russia had history that wherever it invaded, it never went back. Contrary to that, its land proved graveyard for invading forces. Latest example can be quoted of the World War II era when Germans, mightiest militarily at that time, landed in Russia and after clinching considerable victories, besieged Leningrad, now St Petersburg. Siege of Leningrad, also known as the 900-Day Siege, blockade by German forces of the then Union of Soviet Socialist Republics’ (USSR) second largest city during World War II, from September 1941 to January 1944. However, it were the Germans, the invaders, who faced crushing defeat at the end of the day and Russians had the last laugh.

A mighty super power with this history had not only to pull back after accepting defeat from Afghanistan but also largest entity on the world map æ whose area was so large that just before its collapse on its one corner, the sun was setting and on the other corner it was rising æ could not resist its dismemberment and finally crumbled into various pieces.

Similarly, these “extremist” played pivoted role to teach the occupying force in Kashmir a lesson and liberate the jugular vein of our country from Indian occupation by laying their lives which numbers in thousands.

In an environment where unscrupulous people, with their insatiable appetite to plunder the national exchequer and stash money in foreign banks, would be labelled as progressive and, on the other hand, the people who, without getting a penny from the exchequer, spill last drop of blood from their veins would be declared “extremists” and “fundamentalists” then when the country will need young blood to safeguard itself from the enemy, who would like to offer blood?

Establishing a new civilization

The Muslim historian does not judge any civilization on the basis of its material achievement only; he also takes into consideration the extent to which it has realised the basic objective ordained by God, the Creator for His creatures. Allah said: "I have only created Jinns and men, that they may serve Me." (51:56)

Thus, a noble civilization is the one which creates a suitable environment -- political, social, economic, cultural, and material -- that will enable man to direct himself towards the worship of Allah Almighty and to adhere strictly to His commandments in all his activities, unimpeded by the institutions of the society.

These institutions should not be permitted to cause any contradiction between religious belief and conduct, nor should they put pressure on anyone to deviate from his obligations towards Allah, Lord of the worlds.

No matter how advanced a civilization may be in its sciences, literature and arts; no matter how colourful its achievements in architecture, furniture, clothing, and cuisine; no matter how far a civilization has advanced in material progress; in the opinion of the Muslim historian, it still remains "backward" and "deficient" so long as it falls short of creating an environment appropriate to the worship of Allah and the observance of His commandments as embodied in the Shari'ah.

Islamic civilization itself has passed through several stages, and undoubtedly, most of its material achievements were not realised during its early period. Major achievements came in the third and fourth centuries after the Hijra (migration of the Holy Prophet [Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam] to Madinah from Makkah), also termed as "AH".

For this reason, we find the Western historian Adam Mitez voicing the opinion that the fourth century of the Hijra represents the peak of Islamic civilization, because this period was the most appropriate for the worship of Allah.

When compared with the behaviour of the Muslims in the fourth century of the Hijra, the behaviour of the Muslims in the first century was clearly more in accordance with the teachings of the Shari'ah. The Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) alluded to this when he said: "The best of generations is my generation, then those that come after them, then those that come after them."

This logic seems strange indeed to the minds of the non-Muslim historians, because they have accepted the criteria and values of Western civilization. But for the Muslim historian, who has managed to break free of the domination of Western values, criteria and concepts, the whole matter appears self-evident.

The Muslim has been able to achieve this new vision due to the new wave of Islamic awareness, the effects of which are now quite visible throughout the contemporary Islamic world.

One of these effects has been the breaking away of the young Muslim generation from the clutches of Western civilization. Islam and faith have inspired them with feelings of superiority, self-confidence, and independence, both spiritual and intellectual. This is significant because it represents the first correct step in the direction of establishing a new civilization, God willing.

Allah grants success to followers of the true religion
by QHA Rabbani

A lot of people think that followers of the true religion are humiliated, subdued and always defeated, unlike those who follow other paths. So, they do not have certainty in Allah’s promise of victory for His religion and His servants. Rather, even if they don’t say it, they think that this promise is either particular to a specific group, or to a specific time, or they link it to Allah’s will not related to any rules that Allah set in His creation. This attitude and understanding is due to the absence of certainty in the Promise of Allah, the Most High, and due to a poor understanding of His Book.
1. Allah Almighty has explained in His Book that He is the Helper of the believers in this world and the hereafter.
Allah said: "Indeed We will support Our messsengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand." [40:51]
"And whoever is an ally of Allah and His Messenger and those who have believed — indeed, the party of Allah — thhey will be the predominant." [al-Maidah; 5:56]
"Indeed, the ones who oppose Allah and His Messenger — those will be among the most humbled. Allah has written [ie decreed], ‘I will surely overcome, I and My messengers.’ Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might." [al-Mujaadilah 58:20-21].
There are many such verses in the Holy Qur’aan.
2. Allah has also explained in the Holy Qur’aan that what befalls a servant from calamity, or defeat, or other than that, is because of his sins. Allah has explained both of these principles in His Book, so when you join them, the reality of the matter will become clear to you, problems will completely disappear, and you will be in no need of unnecessary, burdening explanations, or far-fetched interpretations. Allah has explained the first principle in different ways, including what has preceded in the verses above.
Likewise, He censured one who seeks help and honour from other than the believers, as in His saying: "O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people. So, you see those in whose hearts is disease [ie hypocrisy] hastening into [association with] them, saying, ‘We are afraid a misfortune may strike us.’ But perhaps Allah will bring conquest or a decision from Him, and they will become, over what they have been concealing within themselves, regretful. And those who believe will say [ie about the hypocrites and their exposure], ‘Are these the ones who swore by Allah their strongest oaths that indeed they were with you?’ Their deeds have become worthless, and they have become losers. O you who have believed, whoever of you should revert from his religion — Allah will bring forth [in place of them] a people He will love and who will love Him [who are] humble towards the believers, powerful against the disbelievers; they strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of a critic. That is the favour of Allah; He bestows it upon whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing. Your ally is none but Allah and [therefore] His Messenger and those who have believed — those who establish prayer and give Zakat, and they bow [in worship]. And whoever is an ally of Allah and His Messenger and those who have believed — indeed, the party of Allah — they will be the predominant." [al-Ma’idah 5:51-56]
So, Allah rebuked those who seek help from other than His party and informed that His party — they will be the predominant. In this regard, He said, "Give tidings to the hypocrites that there is for them a painful punishment. Those who take disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do they seek with them honour [through power]? But indeed, honour belongs to Allah entirely [being the source of all power and honour, Allah grants them to whom He wills]." [al-Nisaa; 4:138-139] "They say, ‘If we return to Al-Madinah, the more honoured [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble.’ And to Allah belongs [all] honour, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know." [Al-Munafiqoon; 63:8] "Whoever desires honour [through power] — then to Allah belongs all honour. To Him ascends good speech, and righteous work raises it [for acceptance by Allah, meaning that righteous deeds are confirmation and proof of what is uttered by tongue]." [Faatir; 35:10] That is, whoever seeks honour, let him seek it by obedience to Allah through good speech and righteous work. "It is He who has sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although they will associate others with Allah dislike it." [at-Taubah 9:33] "O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment? [It is that] you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you should know. He will forgive for you your sins and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence. That is the great attainment. And [you will obtain] another [favour] that you love — victory from Allah and an imminent conquest; and give good tidings to the believers." [Saff 61:10-13] That is, He will give them another [favour] besides forgiveness of their sins and entrance to the Paradise — help and victory: "O you who have believed, be supporters of Allah, as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, ‘Who are my supporters for Allah?’ The disciples said, ‘We are supporters of Allah.’ And a faction of the Children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant." [Saff 61:14] Allah said to Isa (Jesus) [Alaihis salaam], "Indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify [ie free] you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allah alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection." [Aal-e-Imraan 3:55] So because the Christians follow him, they are superior to the Jews until the Day of Resurrection, and because the Muslims follow him more than the Christians, they are superior to them until the Day of Resurrection. Allah said to the believers, "And if these [Makkans] who disbelieve were to fight you, they would certainly turn their backs [in flight]. Then they would not find a protector or a helper. [This is] the established way of Allah which has occurred before. And you will never find in the way of Allah any change." [Fath 48:22-23]
This is addressed to the believers who fulfilled both outward and inward realities of faith. "Indeed, the [best] outcome is for the righteous." [Hud 11:49]. And, "The [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness." [Taha 20:132].
The intended here is the outcome in this world before the next, because He mentioned this after the story of Nooh and his victory over his people and patience with them. So He said, "This is from the news of the unseen, which We reveal to you, [O Muhammad (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam)]. You knew it not, neither you nor your people, before this. So be patient, indeed, the [best] outcome is for the righteous." [Hud 11:49].
That is, the outcome of help for you and those with you, as it was for Nooh (Alaihis Saalaam) and those who believed with him. Likewise His saying, "And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness." [Taha 20:132]
"If good touches you, it distresses them; but if harm strikes you, they rejoice at it. And if you are patient and fear Allah, their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allah is encompassing of what they do." [Aal-e-Imraan 3:120]
"Yes, if you remain patient and conscious of Allah and they [ie the enemy] come upon you [attacking] in rage, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels having marks [of distinction]." [Aal-e-Imraan 3:125]
He said, relating the words of Yousuf (Alaihis salaam) that he was helped due to his taqwa (piety) and his patience. So he said, "I am Yousuf, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favoured us. Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good." [Yousuf 12:90]
"O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty." [al-Anfaal; 8:29]
The criterion is honour and help, and victory and light, which distinguish between the Truth and the falsehood. Allah Almighty says: "And whoever fears Allah — He will make for him a way out. And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent." [at-Talaaq 65:3-4]
Ibn-e-Majah and Ibn-e-Abid-Dunya have related on the authority of Abu Zarr (Radhi Allaho anho) that the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) said: "If all people acted in accordance with this verse, it would suffice them." [Narrators of the Hadith are trustworthy except that the chain is disconnected, so the Hadith is weak]
This is related to the first principle. As for the second principle: "Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uhud], although you had struck [the enemy in the Battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, ‘From where is this?’ Say, ‘It is from yourselves [ie due to your sin].’ And Allah, over all things, is Competent." [Aal-e-Imraan; 3:165]
"Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met [at Uhud] — it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But Allah has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing." [Aal-e-Imraan 3:155]
"And whatever strikes you of disaster — it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much." [ash-Shura 42:30]
"Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He [ie Allah] may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [ie refrain]." [ar-Rum 30:41]
"But if they turn away — then We have not sent you [O Muhammad], over them as a guardian; upon you is only [the duty of] notification. And indeed, when We let man taste mercy from Us, he rejoices in it; but if evil afflicts him for what his hands have put forth, then indeed, man is ungrateful." [ash-Shura 42:48]
"What comes to you of good is from Allah, but what comes to you of evil, [O man], is from yourself. And We have sent you, [O Muhammad], to the people as a Messenger, and sufficient is Allah as Witness." [an-Nisaa 4:79]
This is why Allah Almighty ordered His Messenger and believers to follow what was sent to them, that is, to be obedient to Him. This is the first principle. He also ordered them to wait for His Promise, and this is the second principle. And He ordered them to seek forgiveness and practice patience because the servant will certainly have shortcomings and seeking forgiveness will clear those shortcomings.
Likewise, patience is required while waiting for the Promise. Obedience is perfected and completed with seeking forgiveness, and certainty in the Promise is perfected and completed with patience. Allah Almighty has joined the two in His saying, "So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And ask for forgiveness of your sin and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning." [40:55]
Allah Almighty has mentioned in His Book the stories of the Prophets and their followers and how they saved themselves with patience and obedience. Then He said, "There were certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding." [Yousuf; 12:111]

Salaam Alaykum Everyone.. I know its been a while since my last post. Somehow I wasn't able to come across any good material to post till today. I hope you enjoy it and learn from it as I did. Its an article printed in The News Daily, in their weekly Iqra section.

Modernism in Islam
By Jamaluddin Zarabozo

We can relate, ideologically, the modernist movement spreading these days to one sect in the past. This sect is called the "Mu’tazila", which is dated back to the third Islamic century. Although those people accepted the Holy Qur’aan and Sunnah but they made their own interpretation of the Holy Qur’aan and said that ‘aql’ (intelligence) takes precedence over ‘naql’ (guidance of the Holy Qur’aan and the Holy Prophet [Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam]). However, this school died out. The modernist movement did not evolve from them, but they are very similar to them. The modernist movement actually originated in Europe in the middle ages. At the time when the scientific method came about in Spain, it was seen that what the church was teaching was not true. This led to a slow revolt. The basic view of modernism — in all religions — is that: the religion should change according to the circumstances, and that it is not fixed. There is no such thing as absolute truth.
The Jewish and Christian modernist response in Europe tried to explain how the religion was still relevant for the people. They made innovations to keep people interested in the religion (such as singing in church, introduced only in the 1900’s). They tried to say the divine and the human is mixed in the Bible and that the parts that are true must be the ones that are not out-of-date.
Also, the religion is improving over time and there is no absolute truth in the Bible. This is the time in history when many Muslims were looking to Europe. This led to three choices for those Muslims: accept the West; reject the West; or mix the two (reform Islam). Those who followed the third (the modernist) developed in, and focused on Turkey — because it was under British influence; and Egypt — because Al-Azhar was the seat of Islamic knowledge. The people of this modernist movement judge Islam according to their ‘aql. Some of their faults in regards to it are:
1. Use it for things, which it can’t comprehend;
2. Refer everything to it: accept what agrees with it, reject what does not;
3. Judge the revelation by it.
However, Ahl As-Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ believes that using the sound ‘aql should lead one to the conclusion that the Holy Qur’aan and the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) are true and that their teachings should take precedence over pure ‘aql.
The influence of modernism in US:
Modernists are saying that the West and the world have changed, and that Islam must become "civilised". Modernism has spread the most in the US because:
1. There are no scholars available to refute them, or they won’t refute them because people don’t want to criticise them;
2. It allows Muslims from overseas to become part of American society and they do not have to be recognised as Muslim. Also, new American Muslims will not have to change their old lifestyle;
3. Much of the literature, scholars, and institutions in the US reflect the modernist thinking.
In tafseer, Yusuf Ali is the most popular translator of the meaning of the Holy Qur’aan, even though he denies what the ‘aql can’t see (of the unseen). In Seerah, one book is saying the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) is like anyone else. Another tries to say the Sunnah is not for the Shari’ah and that sometimes we have to throw away the Hadith because Allah did not correct the Prophet’s mistakes when he made ‘ijtihaad’. In Fiqh, modernists say interest is permissible, menstruation women can pray, and Muslim women can marry non-Muslim men. They say the face of women was not covered until 150 years after the time of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam), even though it existed in his time, and that women should always pray in the mosque, even though Hadith only show women in the mosque at Ishaa and Fajr because they could not be recognised in the dark. They also say the Hadith that a people with a woman ruler will not succeed is not true today and polygamy is forbidden except under certain conditions (which do not exist).
Finally, it should be mentioned that this movement is organised and has resources, such as magazines, television, conventions, and literature.
Some of their views:
Modernists influence the thinking of people, and that person spreads their views on unknowingly. Their way of thinking is the most dangerous thing about them. None discuss belief because it is not important to them (‘aql judges naql). They are also trying to remove the Sunnah and say that the system of the old muhadditheen (learned scholars of Hadith) is insufficient. Most say (as do critics of the Bible) that we need a "higher criticism" of Hadith and the earlier conclusions (ijmaa) of scholars are not sufficient, yet they give no new way to judge Hadith.
However, we as Muslims understand that the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) was guided by Allah and that we may not be able to understand everything in the Hadith with our ‘aql. It is common for the modernists to question the role of the Sunnah in the Shari’ah. One said all of the Sunnah is of this world and not religion, even in the Prophet’s time, therefore, it is all a matter of shoora (consultation) and ijtihaad (therefore changeable).
Another says we need to make ijtihaad for what is to be followed, and changes of time and place make Sunnah difficult to use. All of this is mentioned to weaken the view of the Sunnah. The Jews and Christians tried to differ the human from the divine. Modernists try to point out the differences between the Messenger (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) as a human and as a Prophet. They also avoid following the Sunnah by dividing his life into parts (Imam, judge, military leader, prophet, etc), saying some are not divine teachings and not law. Some say everyone is free to make ijtihaad, and later restrictions on it were imposed by the people. Another said a ruling may change even if it is from the Holy Qur’aan and Sunnah.
How do modernists go astray?
The observer can easily point out the following points as the driving force for this trend:
1. Their premises and assumptions are wrong. Modernists look to the West and try to reinterpret the "old religion" with modern science and modern times. They assume that:
a) the present situation is advanced or different (ie "this is not the Prophet’s time!"). However, the idea of progress and that things are better now is Marxian and Hegelian. It is against the Hadith, as the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) said each generation is getting worse. They must prove that there has been progression (no definition of it given). Islamically the advanced society is the one that comes closer to Allah, and understands and applies Islam better (such as the Sahabah). In fact, the current societies have the things of the old societies (such as homosexuality, etc) as mentioned in the Holy Qur’aan;
b) religion is relative to time and place (ie "therefore we need to judge Islam in the light of modern science"). Modernists are "people of science" and judge Islam according to modern science. They think that the West is based on science, but they fail to notice that not all science is based on fact. In reality, much of science is only hypothesis (not a fact). Also, every science has its own philosophy, which will lead to its own conclusions;
c) the way of thinking of a society is based on (is a product of) its environment. Modernists say most of religion is from the people and their environment and it can be judged by later times, and Hadith are related to that time only. However, there is no proof for the modernist hypothesis that religious truth is relative. Allah says the Holy Qur’aan is the truth. Modernists are saying (by inference) that if the Holy Qur’aan is not true now, then it was never true.
2. The methodology they use is wrong. The methodology of the modernists is the way they mislead people to the wrong conclusions. They claim to be scientific, but they are usually inconsistent or have no proof or foundation for their beliefs. Some of the means and principles they use include:
a) Sunnah and Hadith. They claim the Holy Qur’aan is authentic and they only follow "authentic" Hadith. This implies that they have a way to judge Hadith (different from that of the traditional scholars), yet most give no new way to judge Hadith, and are using their ‘aql (intelligence) to determine this (like the female ruler Hadith). Modernists especially dislike Hadith, which have specific meanings and prefer ones, which only have general principles.
b) Use of weak Hadith to help their points and arguments (while they are calling for the use of authentic Hadith). For example, in the area of women in Islam (the two areas the modernists try to change the most are the Sunnah and women) they like to quote two stories from the time of Hadhrat Umar (Radhi Allaho anho): 1) when Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) was delivering a sermon, he tried to restrict the amount of dowry, a woman opposed, and he corrected himself and thanked the woman, and 2) Umar (Radhi Allaho anho) appointed Umm-e-Shifaa as a market-regulator (used by modernist to say women can work in the government). However, both of these stories are not authentic.
C) Use vague terms without defining them. Modernists use terms like democracy, freedom, and equality, but they do not define what they mean by them. The danger in using vague terms is that a knowledgeable person will pass over the word or concept, thinking they meant the Islamic or acceptable definition while in fact they did not, while others may believe what they are saying is true.
d) Do not present all of the relevant information that is available on the subject. That is, from the Holy Qur’aan, Sunnah, etc. They only present that which will support their views. This tactic is used to avoid unliked beliefs, so they just do not mention them.
e) Force their interpretation onto the text. This is what the Muta’zilla did, when they said ‘aql takes precedence over what is from the Holy Prophet (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam). Many modernists say Islam is the "rational" religion. This is true if you mean everything is from Allah and there is no contradiction, but to say that we can study everything in Islam by judging it with only our intellect is unacceptable and there is also no proof for this. To avoid implementing what the Holy Qur’aan and Sunnah says, the modernists say we need to follow the "spirit" of Islam and not worry about the laws specifically. But it is clear from the Holy Qur’aan and Sunnah that we are to take both. They will argue that the text of the Holy Qur’aan only says for women to dress modestly and they do not like to talk about the specific details of Hijab and say we only need to follow the "spirit" of the law.
f) They tend to oppose scholars by saying they meant something else. They say that the door to ijtihaad is open, which is something accepted by the Ahl As-Sunnah Wal Jamaa’. However, it is not open to everybody on any subject. Modernists claim that anyone would make ijtihaad until Imam Shaffie narrowed the qualifications (which is not true), and today anyone can do it. In one magazine, on the question of polygamy and divorce, some said that these two can be restricted by ijtihaad. They often misquote scholars and give their own meanings for what they said.
g) Often follow strange and rejected opinions. They try to revive some of the old opinions because they like it and say that this writer said it in the past. Modernists try to open the door to these opinions and choose what is the most suitable and easy to follow. However, we are supposed to look for the fiqh opinions that are the closest to the truth.
h) Follow their desires. They often make rulings and fatawa without permissible evidence. One said that music is permissible because he did not see something wrong with it, so it is Halal. But he did not check what the Holy Qur’aan and the Sunnah say about this subject.
Islam and modernism:
Ahl As-Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ believes that there is only one true Islam. This is proven in the Holy Qur’aan and Hadith. One Hadith shows the straight line as leading to Allah, and branching paths leading off it with a devil at each one calling to it. Also, the Ummah will break into 73 sects, and the true way is the one who follows Prophet Muhammad (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam) and his companions. Modernists are differing from Ahl As-Sunnah Wal-Jamaa’ in:
1) everything in accordance with the Holy Qur’aan and Sunnah is the truth and what disagrees with it is false (some modernists disagree with this). Also, statements consistent with the Holy Qur’aan and Sunnah are accepted;
2) Ijmaa (consensus) of the Sahabah (and early generations) is a proof for all Muslims. Modernists say the Sahabah are men and we are men, and even matters agreed on by them are open to ijtihaad;
3) anything in the Holy Qur’aan and Sunnah cannot be opposed by ‘aql, rational thought, opinion, or qiyas. This is supported in the Holy Qur’aan and is not open to discussion or vote. One modernist said the amputation of the hand of the thief is a "Khomeni Islam" and is unethical;
4) there are constants in Islam related to belief, worship, etc and these are good, sound, proper, and correct for all places and times. This view is accepted by the Ahl as-Sunnah, but not by many of the modernists, saying that all truth is relative and there is no constants. However, these constant principles are basic aspects of the Ahl as-Sunnah and are traced to the Holy Qur’aan and Sunnah and Sahabah. They are not questionable or changeable things. In many of these things, modernists say we need ijtihaad and revival.
Dangers:
1) Many are influenced by it and do not know it. Also, their views are unacceptable and should be refuted.
2) Many people do not recognise it as a movement of rejection and refutation, so they try to defend it.

Salaam Alaykum
I left couple of pictures last time and commented them. Somehow a friend of mine (Aamir) took it the wrong way and some how assumed that I am calling someone Kafir (disbeliever). Aamir I never used that term so please be careful before you pass you verdict on anyone. And I also didnt speak against visiting graves but I am against the reason graves are visited in pakistan, specially of the saints and scholars of islam. For your information I do believe in Tawassul as I practice it in my life, Alhamdulillah. You wrote a long commment blamming me of this that. I will try to put forward the true essense of Tawassul in Islam. Its true meaning in Islam taught by the Prophet Mohammad PBUH and practiced by his Sahabha.
This is a small answer to all the long comments you wrote. Its an answer by a scholar and not my own "Vague knowledge" about Tawassul. Thats all i am gonna say about this topic. May Allah guide us to the Right Path. Path that He revealed to Prophet Mohammad PBUH and the Path our beloved Prophet PBUH told us to walk. Ameen!

What is meant by tawassul and waseelah is following things:

  1. The kind of tawassul without which faith cannot be complete, which is seeking to reach Allaah (tawassul) by believing in Him and His Messengers, and obeying Him and His Messenger, This is what is meant in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning):
    “O you who believe! Do your duty to Allaah and fear Him. Seek the means of approach to Him…”
    [al-Maa’idah 5:35]
    This includes seeking to approach Allaah through His Names and Attributes, or by doing acts of obedience and worship by which one seeks to approach Allaah, and so on.
  2. Seeking to approach Allaah by asking His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to make du’a’ for one during his lifetime, and the believers asking one another to make du’aa’ for one another. This follows on from the first type and is encouraged.
  3. Seeking to approach Allaah by virtue of the status and virtues of some created being, such as saying, “O Allaah, I ask You by virtue of Your Prophet” and so on. This is allowed by some of the ‘ulama’, but this opinion is da’eef (weak). The correct view is that it is definitely haraam, because there can be no tawassul in du’aa’ except by virtue of the Names and Attributes of Allaah.

Tawassul as it is understood by many of the Muslims of later times, which is calling on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and seeking his help (or seeking the help of the dead and so-called awliya’). This is a form of major shirk, because calling on or seeking help from anyone other than Allaah with regard to something that that only Allaah is able to do is a kind of worship, and directing worship to anyone or anything other than Allaah is major shirk. And Allaah knows best.
